The registrations for the 2020 green card lottery started on October 3 and runs until Nov 6, 2018. Qualified winners will apply for their immigrant visas during the 2020 federal fiscal year that runs from Oct. 1, 2019 to Sept. 30, 2020.
The Diversity Immigrant Visa program, also known as the green card lottery, is a United States government program that provides the right of permanent residency in the country.
The lottery is administered by the Department of State and conducted under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). It makes available 50,000 immigrant visas annually and aims to diversify the immigrant population in the United States, by selecting applicants from countries with low numbers of immigrants in the previous five years. Around 20 million people apply for this lottery each year.
To enter the lottery, applicants must have been born in an eligible country. If selected, to qualify for the immigrant visa, they must have completed a high school education or possess two years of work experience in an occupation which requires at least two other years of training or experience. They must also satisfy general immigration requirements, have no criminal background, and be in good health.
Those born in any country that has sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years are not eligible to receive a diversity visa. For 2020, natives of the following nations are ineligible: Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and Vietnam.
Attention: there are many fraudulent schemes that promise vacancies for the lottery. However, the only way to sign up and be drawn is to go to the Department of State’s website. Official Diversity Visa information can be found at: https://dvlottery.state.gov/.
