How to apply for U.S. citizenship

- Dec/2018

In order to apply for U.S. citizenship, the candidate must be at least 18 years of age, a legal permanent resident (Green Card holder) and must have resided in the United States for at least 5 consecutive years (or 3 years in the case of spouses of U.S. citizens). The first step towards this endeavor is completion of the N-400 form.

After USCIS receives the completed N-400, the candidate will be instructed to appear at an immigration office for fingerprinting, a photograph, and signature, which will confirm the identity of the candidate. After this verification, each candidate undergoes a verbal interview, a written English test, and a civics questionnaire which presents ten questions about the United States.

Approximately six months after completion of the tests and interview, the candidates attend a naturalization ceremony, where they are officially declared American citizens.

Note that, due to the huge demand for the naturalization process in the last two years, the typical six month waiting period can now take up to one year. This period may also be affected by the time of year and the location where the naturalization request is submitted.
