Beware of Scams Related to Social Security

- Jun/2019

Beware of phone calls from someone who claims to work for the Social Security Administration (SSA).  If they request your Social Security number for the purpose of increasing your benefits, threaten to cut off your benefits if you do not provide your number, claim that your social security number has been linked to a drug-related crime, and/or that you need to pay a fee to re-activate it, hang up the phone immediately. This is a scam.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has warned that these scammers use a computer program to appear as though they are calling from 1-800-772-1213 (phone number owned by the Social Security Administration), when in fact they may be calling from any location/entity. Basically, these scammers can control the number displayed on your caller ID.

Remember that the SSA will never call for your Social Security number, nor ask for any type of payment. Never provide your number, not even the last 4 digits. Also, never disclose your bank account or credit card information, should you receive one of these telephone calls.

If you suspect any fraudulent activity related to Social Security or wish to report a scam, contact the SSA administration at 1-800-772-1213. You can also e-mail ftc.gov/complaint.
